About Big History

Big history provides an integrated overview of all of history, from the beginning of the universe up until life on Earth today, using the best available empirical evidence and scholarly methods. While doing so, it answers questions people have asked themselves for centuries, such as how everything has come into existence, in a contemporary scientific way.

By explaining how everything has become the way it is now through examining all of the past, big history helps people to understand their position in time and space better than any other approach to history. The insights gained by studying big history may also help people to prepare themselves better for the future.

Big history was partly inspired by the Apollo Earthrise photo that was taken in 1968. It roots can be traced back to the eighteenth century, when people first started to use all embracing scientific perspectives for looking at history. Find out more.
